Qualitative Analysis about Experience of a Mental Hospital Psychiatric Technicians during Isolation and Restraint Work - Focus on the Consensual Qualitative Research

The purpose of this study is to investigate the experience of a mental hospital psychiatric technicians during isolation and restraint work. The data is analyzed by Consensual Qualitative Research Methods. Study participants are the technicians who have worked for 3-5 years at a mental hospital. They were interviewed from June 2014 to November 2014. This study drew 13 sub-domains based on records from the depth interviews. Each domain was cross-analyzed and categorized according to frequency. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, when they receive isolation and restraint order, they express bad feelings to avoid it because sometimes they have experienced insulting and offensive behavior from patients during their work. They also worry about accidents. Second, isolation and restraint job makes them feel pity and compassion to patient. They also expressed anxiety with fear of retaliation after those patients will be discharged. Third, the work is difficult itself. Improvement of labor conditions and continuing education will be necessary for psychiatric technicians to have the expertise and the identity.
